Piggy Banks: an introduction

Gert’s piggy bank pages

Saving piggy banks is saving your heritage!

Introduction

Gert Deelman is a Dutch collector of piggy banks since 1965. His collection contains about 850 different piggy banks. Gert only collects original old fashioned stone piggy banks. The kind you have to smash to pieces, if you want the money you saved in the piggy bank. For Gert’s collection that is just a metaphor, as you will understand.

Entering Gert’s collection a piggy bank must:

· look like a pig

· be made of clay, porcelain or plaster/ chalk ware

· not have a stopper in the belly bottom, or elsewhere

Why piggy banks without a stopper?

Gert collects only piggy banks without a stopper in the belly bottom for two reasons:

1. In his opinion these are the authentic piggy banks;

2. Collecting also means to limit the amount of things you want to collect and to exhibit in your home. With a stopper one can buy thousands…..
